"Berwick-upon-Tweed: Discovering the Italian engineers' medieval fortifications", a talk by Lorenza Casini.

Berwick-upon-Tweed fortifications are well known in the British history as well as being a popular current tourist attraction, but few are aware of the important role that Italian engineers played in their design. An engaging talk, by architect Lorenza Casini, will give an insight into this fascinating relationship between British architects and Italian engineers of the 15th and 16th century.

[Lorenza was born in Italy and moved to Manchester while still a teenager, today she is a qualified architect who continues to live and work in Manchester.]

Venue: Cross Street Chapel, Cross Street, Manchester M2 1NL

“20th Century Visual Dante”

An illustrated talk by Emma Marigliano

Emma Marigliano is Librarian of the Portico Library in Manchester which houses a 19th century collection amassed by the great and the good of the world’s first industrial city. Emma’s research on the illustrated Divine Comedy has focussed on the wealth of material that has emerged from the 20th century to date and, although Botticelli, Doré and Blake are the best known illustrators of Dante’s seminal work, she feels that the later artists have been unfettered by the restrictions imposed by political and religious demands and their imagination is almost as impressive as Dante’s own painted words.

The presentation is organised in cooperation with The Portico Library & Gallery and will be followed by a social gathering with drinks and nibbles. Booking is required
.

OUR APPLICATION TO TAKE PART IN MANCHESTER DAY PARADE 2012 HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL.

The theme of this year’s parade is ‘The Sky’s the limit… a celebration of heroic achievements’, inspiring a host of diverse and creative ideas. The Parade will celebrate men and women in the worlds of science and technology; in music, culture and the arts; in industry, in sport, in the natural world. Our Society will share with Manchester the outstanding achievement of Dante Alighieri, Italy’s “Sommo Poeta” and Father of the Italian language. ANDARE A NASO: NON E' FACILE!

Andare a naso vuol dire seguire l'istinto.

'Andare a naso' means follow your instinct. The olfactory system is, without doubt, the most complicated of our sensory systems. Until fairly recently, its importance was underestimated, but we now recognise that it plays a major role in everyday life. We like or dislike certain foods not only because of their physical characteristics (colour, texture), but also because of their smell. Take fruit, for example: everyone knows that a freshly picked apple has a very distinctive scent, or that a fine wine with a beautiful colour may have an unpleasant smell because it is corked. Then there is the pleasure we get from the smell of coffee or freshly baked bread. What we smell exerts a subtle but decisive influence on our behaviour from the moment we are born...a newborn baby recognises its mother from her smell!

Speaker: Dr Anna Maria Pisanelli - School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, The University of Manchester.

The talk (in English) will be followed by a drinks reception.

“Jodrell Bank Observatory is part of the University of Manchester School of Physics and Astronomy. The facility is located in the central Cheshire countryside and when the radio telescope stands vertically it dominates the landscape for many miles around as it has since the mid-20th century.

The observatory was established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell, who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar in the Second World War. When the 218ft diameter parabolic reflecting aerial was built, it was the largest radio telescope in the world. It has since played an important role in the research on meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is currently the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world”.
